The flu vaccine is a vaccine that helps protect against the flu. It is a shot that is given as an injection. The flu vaccine is made up of killed (inactivated) viruses.
There are two types of flu vaccine: the trivalent vaccine and the quadrivalent vaccine. The trivalent vaccine protects against three types of flu viruses: two type A flu viruses and one type B flu virus. The quadrivalent vaccine protects against four types of flu viruses: two type A flu viruses and two type B flu viruses.
Which flu vaccine is right for me?
The type of flu vaccine that is right for you depends on your age and your health.
The trivalent vaccine is recommended for:
People who are 6 months of age or older.
People who are healthy and do not have any chronic medical conditions.
The quadrivalent vaccine is recommended for:
People who are 6 months of age or older.
People who are healthy and do not have any chronic medical conditions.
People who have chronic medical conditions.
People who are 65 years of age or older.
Pregnant women.
People who are close contacts of someone who is at high risk for serious complications from the flu.
People who are traveling to a country where the flu is common.
What are the risks of getting the flu vaccine?
The risks of getting the flu vaccine are very low. The most common side effect of the flu vaccine is a sore arm where the shot was given.
